Upper Valmarecchia Tour
Itinerary: Novafeltria, Sant’Agata Feltria, Casteldelci, Pennabilli, Maiolo, San Leo, Novafeltria
Setting off from Novafeltria, this uphill route with a wonderful view is quite long, but not too challenging. It leads to Sant’Agata, where a wonderful view over the whole valley on the one side, and of the Tuscan countryside on the other will open up right before your eyes. From here you will cycle towards Casteldelci, the furthest point from the Valmarecchia, an area that is also known as the “green sea” due to the endless expanse of thick woodland that surrounds it: it is an ideal place to have a break and rest, surrounded by the nature of the Upper Valley. When your legs are rested, you will return to Novafeltria by cycling through the delightful town of Pennabilli, and make sure you don’t miss out on a visit to the magical San Leo and its fortress.
Curiosities
Pennabilli, a city of culture and museums at the foot of Monte Carpegna, takes its name from the union of its two ancient castles, which at one time belonged to rival families: the Penna and the Billi. It is worth having a stroll through the streets of the old town looking for hidden treasures by poet Tonino Guerra. While Casteldelci is a destination that is especially loved by hikers and mountain bikers: many trails that start here lead to Mount Fumaiolo from which the Tiber River springs.
