Climbing towards the Malatesta fortresses
Itinerary: Rimini, San Martino dei Mulini, Santarcangelo di Romagna, Verucchio, Montescudo, Montefiore Conca, Saludecio, Mondaino, Montegridolfo, Gradara, Cattolica
If you love racing bikes, have a good level of training and want to discover the history of the territory of Rimini then this route is ideal for you. Starting in Rimini you’ll tackle at least five demanding climbs, including Verucchio and Montefiore. The inclines are mind-boggling, but the beautiful panoramic views and the traces of history found along the way will make the day truly special. So, forget about the watts1 and take time to visit some of the most important sites linked to the Malatesta family, such as Santarcangelo di Romagna Castle, Mondaino Castle and Gradara Castle.
Mondaino Caste is a typical example of a Malatesta fortress, built to ensure strategic control of the territory and to defend the family from attacks by a rival family, headed by Federico da Montefeltro. Further fortified by Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta, Mondaino Castle was once protected by perimeter walls with 13 towers. Still open for visits to this day, the fortress terrace offers truly breath-taking views of Romagna.
