Itinerary: Bertinoro, Fratta Terme, Meldola, Predappio, Sadurano, Castrocaro Terme

An itinerary for trained legs, this tour takes us on a journey of discovery – including some hard climbs – of a number of the most famous medieval fortresses of the Forlì hinterland. Starting from the town of Bertinoro, it winds through valleys rich in vineyards and olive groves, interspersed with spurs of “Spungone” on which the fortresses of Meldola, Predappio and Castrocaro Terme were built. Never flat, the route is a succession of ups and downs such as to put even the most expert cyclists to the test. All the more reason to take a break and enjoy the beauty of an area steeped in history and centuries-old traditions. On arrival in Castrocaro Terme you can reward yourself by taking advantage of the famous spa centre.

Curiosities

The Spungone – in the dialect of Romagna, Spungone indicates a special type of sandstone/limestone rock with a “spongy” appearance. The rocky ridge from Bertinoro to Castrocaro Terme consists of Spungone, which makes the area particularly suitable for growing vines and olive trees.
