Itinerary: Santarcangelo, Poggio Torriana, Talamello, Novafeltria, Sant’Agata Feltria, Casteldelci, Pennabilli, Maiolo, San Leo, Verucchio, Santarcangelo
This route is perfect if you love a challenge. There is a lot of elevation gain and many kilometres to cycle along among hamlets, fortresses, and excellent food and wine which are part of the Valmarecchia, one of the most beautiful areas in Emilia Romagna. Setting off from Santarcangelo, you will cycle towards Sant’Agata on the discovery of the whole area and its scenery. You will cycle through all 10 towns in the Valley and along the northern bank of the Marecchia River up to Casteldelci and its mountains, and then back along the opposite side of the Valley, with a visit to San Leo, which is a must. This is a truly varied itinerary that will enchant and amaze you. Do not forget that your legs will be put to the test, but the effort is definitely worth it.
Casteldelci, the southernmost municipality of Emilia Romagna, is also known as the “green sea” thanks to the lush vegetation of the surrounding mountains. During medieval times, its special location favoured the construction of many fortified settlements, of which vestiges remain to this day. Above the village towers Mount Fumaiolo, which the Tiber River springs from, and nearby stands Mount Zucca, which the Marecchia River springs from.
